Raiffeisenbank Galgenen

A new square takes shape

The new Raiffeisenbank building together with the existing bakery building next door create an inviting new square. A fountain and an outdoor café are the main features, sitting against the backdrop of the bank’s side façade and the new fire protection wall of the bakery. Both façades are characterised by beige concrete and large street-level entrances. With the church and school across the street, the new square takes its place in a larger spatial context.

Schoolhouse Gossau

A unique part of the whole

The ‘Rooswis’ school sits adjacent to a neighbourhood of single-family homes and apartment buildings on the outlying edge of Gossau. The buildings and open spaces are arranged in a comb-like pattern along the uphill path. This basic structure allows the surrounding agricultural land to flow into the settled area. The new structure is integrated into this configuration. It is positioned as a spatial and functional continuation of the uppermost building. The shape of the roof is roughly based on the existing buildings, yet manifests a certain independence as it visualises the rise of the hill.

Schoolhouse Hinwil

One with nature

The ‘Meiliwiese’ school grounds are located in the centre of the village of Hinwil and surrounded by charming green spaces. The two-storey expansion encompasses the library, media library and toy library. These rooms are also open to the public outside school hours. That factor gives the new structure a central role to play, namely as a focal point and gathering place for village residents. The new construction is a wood and concrete structure, with the slim wooden pillars of the façade establishing a connection with the surrounding trees. Meanwhile, the large courtyard brings not only light, but nature itself into the interior space.

Whiling away the time together

The ‘Im Morgen’ retirement home is located on the outskirts of the village centre of Weiningen. The existing buildings are positioned in an offset configuration to one other, thereby creating appealing open spaces and delightful courtyards between them – these are elements that are of critical importance to residents’ sense of well-being. This is where they meet each and take part in community activities. The expansion blends in with and extends this structure. The spaces just outside of the apartments face the outdoor areas and invite residents to take a stroll or linger in the common areas.

Nature and architecture in harmony

The concept behind the construction of a new nursing home in Wangen is a self-contained, two-storey space. The two-floor arrangement keeps the distances between the common rooms and individual residential rooms brief for residents. Within the building, spacious courtyards alternate with compact rooms linked by a passage that opens into attractive lounge areas. Residents enjoy pleasant views of the surrounding green areas from almost anywhere in the building. Overall, architecture and nature combine to form an appealing whole.

Nursing Home Schattdorf

Weaving together indoor and outdoor spaces

A single contiguous ground floor creates the basis for the expansion of the retirement and nursing home in Schattdorf. From this base, three buildings of different heights and uses rise towards the sky, forming an ensemble that presents a different façade depending on the direction from which the structure is viewed. At the same time, this staggered structure – both in height and depth – reinforces the building’s position at the crossroads between single-family homes and an industrial zone. The heart of the complex is a large, bright courtyard, which is accessible from the inside and extends the indoor area to the outside space.

A new centre

The location of the proposed new structure is a crucial factor in the overall concept. The three-storey structure expands the existing space to incorporate the required class and group rooms while simultaneously creating a new main entrance. From here, the different buildings can be accessed via a covered passage. Between the new structure and the three original buildings, two valuable new outdoor spaces are created that can be used as all-weather pitches or general-purpose green spaces.

Nursing Home Elm

Tradition with a view

The location of the 'Sernftal' retirement and nursing home on the outskirts of the village of Elm is decidedly picturesque. The multi-storey wooden structure is perched atop an elevated basement. The annexe is directly attached to the original structure. It complements the elevated basement storey and rises in the form of a two-storey annexe a short distance from the main building. The new, expansive entrance area invites visitors to linger and mingle. Wood shingles were used in the renovation of the original building – a long-established practice in the region. The façade of the new structure, with its rough-hewn slate slabs, also pays homage to local traditions.
